Who knew the Virgin digs fireworks?


People told me that the arrival of the Virgin of El Cisne in Loja is a big thing. Pilgrims set off on the 15th of August and carry the statue 75 kilometers to the central park of Loja. At the end of the pilgrimage, Loja welcomes Mary with fireworks, a live orchestra and a priest who works the crowd like he is a commentator at a soccer game. “VIVA VIRGEN DEL CISNE! VIVA LOJA! VIVA…”

In honor of the Virgin Mary, the city will have lots of events in the evening, until the end of November when the statue will be returned to El Cisne.

The wooden statue of Mary was carved by Diego de Robles after the Virgin Mary appeared in the city of El Cisne in 1594.

The fireworks, the orchestra and the overly energetic priest was amazingly entertaining and I wish, at least once in a life time, everyone could experience this.

Secrets of a River

Two weeks ago, Saturday afternoon, the Wilf and I set off for another trip, this time a little shorter than around Christmas. We headed to Celica and stayed the night at a hostel which was by the main square. After suffering through the 'comforting' sounds of the night (motorcycles buzzing, people shouting and singing with alcohol-induced confidence and vocal talent), we woke up early and got a lift from the owner of the hostel and his son. The old man took us to his favorite spot on the river, which ran in the valley next to the town, and led us to an astonishing river pool.  The water was crystal clear, with tadpoles swimming around the bottom. Wilfred even tried catching some with a stick, but had no luck. On the other side of the river, two giant boulders sat in the water belittlingly. Melting into his arms...

First, I would like to just say, quite defensively, that I’m not a homosexual, even though this post will make you question that. I dress like a metrosexual, but I don’t actually like men. Back in late September, when I still wasn’t as familiar with the local places and cool people, a warm Thursday evening the gang from Intercambio (language exchange) went to La Fiesta, which is a popular club in Loja. After dancing and flirting for about an hour, I went outside to get some air where Juan invited me to go to La Pileta, which is a square surrounded by bars and clubs, to which I replied “Why not.
